O’Donnell Anfitrion LGBTI Activista y Delegación de América Latina, estrategias sobre cómo hacer frente a los desafíos comunes.

03 de febrero 2014 – Esta Mañana en el  Estado de Nueva York el  asambleísta Daniel J. O’Donnell tuvo el honor de acoger una delegación de activistas LGBTI de América Latina a través de el Departamento de Programa de Liderazgo de Visitantes Internacionales del Estado de EE.UU. . Durante el desayuno , el grupo llevó a cabo una sesión de estrategia sobre los desafíos que cada uno de ellos se enfrentan en sus propios países , y cómo pueden aprender el uno del otro. Los temas abarcaron desde el Matrimonio Igualitario hasta la  lucha contra la intimidación a la violencia contra las personas LGBTI , y el tratamiento y protección para los LGBTI neoyorquinos.

El mensaje rotundo de la mañana fue la necesidad de emplear diversas estrategias para cambiar los corazones y las mentes de la gente: O’Donnell elogió a todos los líderes de su visibilidad individual y el trabajo duro para llamar la atención sobre sus alcanses. Cuando Paulina Torres Mora de Costa Rica , Coordinadora del Beso Diverso, pidió al asambleísta O’Donnell cómo grupos de activistas civiles pueden presionar  mejor a un gobierno, subrayó la importancia de lograr que los funcionarios abiertamente gay elegidos en oficina dijera que » De esa manera siempre hay alguien alrededor cuando se está debatiendo la legislación , no una persona externa o grupo , pero uno de los suyos, un colega. » En su propia experiencia, que era capaz de poner presion a sus colegas cuando el Matrimonio Igualitario se acercó. Él explicó: » Lo hice muy incómodo para mis colegas «, si no apoyaban la issne .

O’Donnell habló largo y tendido con Diane Marie Rodríguez Zambrano de Ecuador , Presidente de la Asociación Silueta X , quien fue la primera persona trans para cargos de elección popular en Ecuador , Maning 05 2013 . A pesar de que perdió , ( como se señaló O ‘ Donnell , muchos políticos lo hacen por primera vez, él mismo incluido ) , que se rompió una barrera importante . Como resultado , fue invitada a la inauguracion del presidente Correa, y fue capaz de establecer una reunión con él para los activistas LGBTI ecuatorianos. Rodríguez Zambrano se centró en mejorar su comprensión de los asesinatos y la violencia contra trans y todas las personas LGBTI en Ecuador , y mostrándole que si bien la Constitución ecuatoriana profesa la igualdad , en la práctica muchos se quedan fuera .

Desivis Ventura de la República Dominicana , Coordinador General de REVASA (Red de Voluntarios » Amigos Siempre Amigos «) pidió al asambleísta O’Donnell no sólo acerca de su trabajo con la comunidad LGBTI en Nueva York, sino de cómo el mejor defensor entre los no- LGBTI latinos, que pueden ser muy difíciles de convencer .

«Hay que cambiar la película en la cabeza «, dijo O’Donnell. La clave , dice, es hacer una clara separación entre las licencias de matrimonio civil y ceremonias de la iglesia . en sus primeros discursos O’Donnell habló sobre el matrimonio como un derecho civil , pero a medida que pasaba el tiempo su mensaje evoluciona aunque resultó ser más eficaz , que la igualdad era el objetivo . Esteban Paulon de Argentina , presidente de FALGBT ( la argentina , Lesbian , Gay , Bisexual y Transgénero federación ), señaló que la lucha por la igualdad del Matrimonio fue similar en Argentina . De hecho , dijo que ellos experimentaron una progresión similar en el lenguage del matrimonio homosexual al matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo y matrimonio igualitario ante la ley fue aprobada allí.

Asambleísta O’Donnell tuvo el honor de conocer a wiht un impresionante grupo de América Latina, tales agentes de cambio , todos los cuales han logrado un progreso increíble en sus países. Estos extraordinarios esfuerzos han incluido la lucha por la mejora de las protecciones para las personas LGBTI, la promoción de la visibilidad LGBTI , prevención de la discriminación y el acoso, ganando la lucha por la igualdad de Matrimonio y Maning para un cargo como el primer candidato abiertamente trans en Ecuador. Él espera con interés el mantenimiento y trabajar juntos para desarrollar fuertes lazos entre la comunidad LGBTI global, con el fin de buscar el cambio juntos.

Jenny Eisenberg-del Departamento de Estado de EE.UU. Cerró la reunión recordando al grupo que el Programa de Liderazgo para Visitantes Internacionales ha estado presente desde hace 75 años , acoge 5.000 visitantes al año, y cuenta con 45 jefes de Estado actuales y más de 290 jefes de Estado en el pasado entre sus ex alumnos. O’Donnell agregó, al grupo, «Los próximos funcionarios elegidos podrían ser usted!».

O’Donnell Host LGBTI Activist Delegation from Latin America, Strategizes on How to face common Challenges.

February 3, 2014 – This moming New York State Assembly Member Daniel J. O’Donnell was honored to host a delegation of LGBTI activists from Latin American throngh the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Over breakfast, the group held a strategy session about the challenges each of them face in their own countries, and how they can leam from one another. Topics ranged from Marriage Equality  to anti-bullying to violence against LGBTI individuals, and treatment and protections for LGBTI New Yorkers.

The resounding message of the morming was the need to employ diverse strategies to change people’s hearts and minds: O’Donnell commended all the leaders on their individual visibility and hard work to draw attention to their canses. When Paulina Torres Mora of Costa Rica, Coordinator of Beso Diverso, asked Assembly Member O’Donnell how civil activist groups can best pressuce the govemment, he underscored the importance of getting openly gay elected officials into office, saying » That way someone is always around when legislation is being debated, not an outside person or group, but one of their own, a colleagne.» In his own experience, be was able to put pressuce on his colleagues whenever Marrige Equality came up. He Explained: » I made it extremely uncomfortable for my colleagues» if they did not support the issne.

O’Donnell spoke at length with Diane Marie Rodriguez Zambrano of Ecuador, President of the Silueta X Association, who was the first trans person to me for elected office in Ecuador, maning in May 2013. Though she lost, (as O’ Donnell noted, many politicians do the first time, himself included), she broke down an important barrier. As a resulr, she was invited to President Correa’s inauguration, and was able to set up a meeting with him for Ecuadorian LGBTI activists. Rodriguez Zambrano focused on improving his understanding of the murders and violence againt trans and all LGBTI individuals in Ecuador, and showing him that while the Ecuadorian constitution professes equality, in practice many are left out.

Desivis Ventura of the Dominican Republic, General Coordinator of REVASA (Network of  Volunteers «Amigos Siempre Amigos») asked Assembly Member O’Donnell not only about his work with the LGBTI community in New York, but about how to best advocate among non-LGBTI Latinos, who can be very hard to convince.

«You have to change the movie in their heads,» said O’Donnell.The key, he says, is to make a clear separation between civil marriage licenses and church ceremonies. in his early speeches O’Donnell spoke about marriage as a civil right, but as time went on his message evoveld to one he found to be more effective, that equality was the goal. Esteban Paulon of Argentina, president of FALGBT (the Argentine, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender federation) pointed out that the fight for Marrige Equality was similar in Argentina. In fact, he said that they experienced a similar progression in lenguage from gay marriage to same-sex marriage to Mmarriage Equality before the law was passed there.

Assembly Member O’Donnell was honored to meet wiht such an impressive group of Latin American Change-makers, all of whom have achieved incredible progress im their countries. These extraordinary efforts have included fighting for improved protections for LGBTI individuals, promoting LGBTI visibility, preventing discrimination and harassment, winning the fight for marrige equality, and maning for office as the first openly trans candidate in Ecuador. He looks forward ti keeping in rouch and working together to develop strong ties among the global LGBTI community, in order to pursue change together.

Jenny Eisenberg- of the U.S state Department closed the meeting by reminding the group that the International Visitor Leadership Program has been around for 75 years, hosts abut 5,000 visitors annually, and boasts 45 current heads of state and over 290 past heads of state among its alumni.
