Nobel de la paz rechaza que Dios sea homofóbico

El arzobispo de Ciudad del Cabo y premio Nobel de la Paz, Desmond Tutu, rechazó hoy que Dios odie a los homosexuales y comparó la homofobia con el racismo.

«A muchos de nosotros nos produce angustia imaginar que Dios pueda crear a alguien y decirle: ‘Te odio. Te odio por cómo te he hecho'», dijo el líder religioso en Ciudad del Cabo, durante la presentación de una campaña de la ONU por la igualdad de las minorías sexuales.

«¿Pueden imaginarme a mí, que he dicho que es injusto castigar por algo que no se elige como la raza o el sexo, callado cuando hay personas perseguidas, asesinadas por su orientación sexual?», añadió el antiguo activista contra el régimen racista sudafricano del «apartheid».

«Yo pienso que esto (la homofobia) es exactamente igual de injusto, como lo fue siempre el racismo», agregó Tutu, quien recordó también que los homosexuales «no son una raza aparte», tal y como sostienen algunos, informó hoy la agencia local de noticias Sapa.

«No quisiera ir a un cielo que fuera homófobo. No, mejor me disculparía y diría que quiero ir a otro lugar», añadió el mítico luchador por los derechos humanos, con su habitual vehemencia.

«Tenemos que construir una sociedad tolerante, y no tendremos una sociedad libre hasta que todas y cada una de las personas sean reconocidas y aceptadas por lo que son», señaló Tutu, quien dijo ser consciente de que muchos líderes religiosos consideran pecado la homosexualidad.

Tutu, de 81 años, participó en el inicio de la campaña global de la ONU «Libre e igual», que pretende concienciar sobre la violencia y la discriminación contra las minorías sexuales.

El premio Nobel de la Paz de 1984 indicó que mucha gente no puede elegir libremente su estilo de vida debido a los «prejuicios» y a la «violencia potencial» a la que se enfrentan.

Esta no es la primera vez que el líder religioso defiende la homosexualidad: el pasado mes de diciembre pidió al Gobierno de Uganda que rechazara un borrador de ley que pretende endurecer las penas contra estos colectivos.

«Con gran dolor contemplo la subyugación y represión de hermanos africanos cuyo único crimen es practicar el amor. El odio, en ninguna de sus formas, tiene lugar en la casa de Dios», manifestó entonces Tutu.

Pese a ser el único país africano que reconoce legalmente el matrimonio homosexual y el derecho de adoptar niños a parejas del mismo sexo, los ataques a las minorías y su discriminación son habituales en Sudáfrica, especialmente entre la mayoría negra, pobre y poco educada.

Nobel Peace rejects that God is homophobic

The Archbishop of Cape Town and Nobel Peace Prize, Desmond Tutu, denied today that God hates homosexuals and compared homophobia to racism.

«Many of us feel anguish imagine that God can create someone and say, ‘I hate you. I hate you for what you’ve done,'» said the religious leader in Cape Town, during the presentation of a UN campaign for equality of sexual minorities.

«Can you imagine me, I said it is unfair to punish for something that is not chosen as race or sex, silent when people are persecuted, murdered for their sexual orientation?» Added the former activist against the racist South African regime of «apartheid».

«I think it (homophobia) is just as unfair as it ever was racism,» said Tutu, who recalled that homosexuals «are not a breed apart», as some maintain, the agency reported today Sapa local news.

«I would go to a heaven that was homophobic. No. Maybe I apologize and say I want to go somewhere else,» added the legendary fighter for human rights, with his usual vehemence.

«We have to build a tolerant society, and we will have a free society until every one of the people to be recognized and accepted for who they are,» said Tutu, who said he was aware that many religious leaders consider homosexuality sin.

Tutu, 81, participated in the beginning of the UN’s global campaign «free and equal», which aims to raise awareness about violence and discrimination against sexual minorities.

The Nobel Peace Prize 1984 indicated that many people can not choose their lifestyle because of «prejudice» and «potential violence» that they face.

This is not the first time the religious leader defends homosexuality: last December requested the Government of Uganda to reject a draft law that would toughen penalties against these groups.

«With great sorrow contemplate the subjugation and repression of fellow Africans whose only crime is to practice love. Hatred in any form, takes place in the house of God,» Tutu said then.

Despite being the only African country to legally recognize same-sex marriage and the right to adopt children to same-sex couples, attacks on minorities and discrimination are common in South Africa, especially among the black majority, poor and uneducated.
