Drag brings together performance, makeup, fashion, music, humor, character and imagination. For Asociación Silueta X, cultural expression can also create opportunities for visibility, participation, creativity and the exercise of human rights.

An important distinction

Drag is an artistic expression. It is not a gender identity or sexual orientation.

People who perform drag can have any gender identity or sexual orientation. Drag is defined by artistic creation, performance and the intentional use, reinterpretation or transformation of gender, aesthetic and theatrical codes.

LGBT+ culture

Drag has a longstanding place within LGBT+ culture and visibility

Drag artists have contributed to entertainment, nightlife, Pride celebrations, performance spaces and other forms of cultural participation associated with LGBT+ communities.

Recognizing this relationship does not mean confusing drag with sexual orientation or gender identity. It means recognizing the cultural contribution that drag can make within LGBT+ spaces and society more broadly.

There is no single correct way to do drag

Glamour, comedy, theater, dance, parody, fantasy, fashion, cabaret, experimental aesthetics and performance can all coexist within a much wider creative universe.

Art without discrimination

Artistic expression does not diminish a person’s right to dignity.

No one should face violence, discrimination or exclusion from rights simply because they participate in an artistic expression involving gender, aesthetics or LGBT+ culture.
