Culture as participation

Movement can become a language of creativity, visibility and participation.

Vogue combines dance, poses, lines, rhythm, performance, attitude and individual interpretation. Within Silueta X’s cultural work, it provides another way to connect artistic expression with LGBT+ visibility and participation.

The program approaches Vogue as culture and artistic practice rather than as a clinical or therapeutic intervention.

Cultural context matters

Vogue cannot be separated from the cultural history of Ballroom

Voguing developed within Ballroom culture, shaped particularly by Black and Latino LGBT+ communities in New York City. Dance, fashion, performance, competition, chosen family and community expression became interconnected within that cultural world.

Silueta X approaches Vogue with respect for those cultural roots while developing activities within the Ecuadorian context.

Program objectives

Cultural participation can support visibility, creativity and human rights.

Expand participation Create more opportunities to participate in dance, performance and cultural activities.
Strengthen expression Encourage experimentation with movement, creativity, aesthetics and performance.
Increase visibility Help diverse cultural expressions occupy public and cultural spaces.
Build connections Connect participants, artists, organizations, cultural initiatives and institutional partners.

Bodies & expression

Movement does not require one type of body, identity or gender expression

Cultural participation should not depend on fitting one aesthetic standard or performing gender in a predetermined way.

Vogue offers possibilities for exploring movement, presence and interpretation through different bodies and individual forms of expression.

A principle

Everyone deserves the possibility to move, create and occupy cultural space with dignity.

Why international support matters

Human-rights work does not happen only in courtrooms and policy spaces.

Culture can create another entry point into participation. Dance, performance and public expression can help widen representation, create connections and make LGBT+ cultural life more visible.

Supporting cultural work allows human-rights organizations to engage not only with situations of harm, but also with creativity, participation and public presence.

Opportunities for support
