Nonbinary People & Gender Diversity

Human gender is more diverse than two boxes. Asociación Silueta X recognizes people whose gender does not fit exclusively within the categories of man or woman and promotes access to information, wellbeing, participation and rights.

Gender diversity

Not everyone experiences gender exclusively as a man or a woman.

Some people identify as nonbinary. Others use different terms to describe gender experiences that do not fit completely within a binary framework.

This page is not here to define anyone. It is here to make information, respect and pathways to support easier to find.

Understanding gender diversity

What does “nonbinary” mean?

Nonbinary is a broad term used by some people whose gender identity is not experienced exclusively as a man or exclusively as a woman.

Identity Gender identity describes how a person understands and experiences their own gender.
Expression Clothing, appearance, voice or behavior do not automatically determine someone’s gender identity.
Diversity There is no single way to experience, express or name a nonbinary or gender-diverse identity.
Autonomy Each person decides which words they use for themselves and which aspects of their identity they wish to share.

Identity without pressure

No one has to prove that they are “nonbinary enough”

A person does not need a particular appearance, body modification, name, medical intervention or transition pathway for their identity to deserve respect.

People may also use different names, pronouns, labels or forms of gender expression — and those choices can change over time.

Our principle

Respecting someone’s identity does not require understanding every part of it. It requires recognizing the person’s dignity.

Everyday respect

Names, pronouns and respectful treatment

One simple form of respect is using the name and pronouns a person asks others to use.

When you do not know how someone wishes to be addressed, asking respectfully is usually better than assuming.

Intersectionality

No identity exists separately from the rest of a person’s life

A nonbinary person may also be young or older, Afro-descendant, Indigenous, a migrant, refugee or displaced person, a person with a disability, someone living with HIV, or someone experiencing economic inequality.

Gender Identity and gender expression can create specific barriers.
Age Young people and older adults can encounter very different environments.
Geography & mobility Migration, displacement and place of residence also affect access to rights and services.
Social conditions Poverty, disability, ethnicity and other inequalities can intersect with gender diversity.

Inclusion is stronger when it is built into systems — not added as an afterthought

Recognizing gender diversity is only the beginning. Inclusive institutions also review how people are addressed, how forms and services are structured, how discrimination is handled and whether individuals can reach the support they need without being misunderstood at the first point of contact.
