David Kato Vision y Voz Premio Secretaría se desplaza al Foro Mundial sobre HSH y VIH

MSMGF apoyará operaciones del prestigioso premio internacional que reconoce los líderes que trabajan para defender los derechos sexuales de las personas LGBTI de todo el mundo

El Comité Directivo de la David Kato Vision Award y voz anunció hoy que el Foro Mundial sobre HSH y VIH (MSMGF) ha sido seleccionado para servir como la Secretaría junto con el prestigioso premio internacional, que reconoce a los líderes que trabajan para defender los derechos sexuales de las personas, gays, bisexuales, transgénero e intersexuales (LGBTI) lesbianas de todo el mundo. La Secretaría se mueve al MSMGF de la Federación de Planificación Familiar Internacional (IPPF), que ayudó a establecer el premio y sirvió como su Secretaría desde la creación del premio en 2011.

«El liderazgo de la IPPF ha sido fundamental en el éxito del Premio David Kato y su labor por promover la visión de un mundo donde las personas LGBTI puedan vivir libres de la violencia, el estigma y la discriminación de David», dijo MSMGF Director Ejecutivo Dr. George Ayala. «El MSMGF es un honor tener la oportunidad de continuar el apoyo a esta importante iniciativa».

El Premio David Kato fue fundada en conmemoración de la vida y obra de la reconocida activista de derechos humanos ugandés David Kato, quien fue trágicamente asesinado en su casa en Kampala en enero de 2011. David Kato campaña incansable por los derechos humanos a lo largo de su carrera, con especial atención a los derechos de las personas LGBTI en África.

Se concede anualmente el Premio David Kato se presenta a un individuo que demuestra valentía y liderazgo sobresaliente en la defensa de los derechos sexuales de las personas LGBTI, sobre todo en circunstancias difíciles y entornos de política insolidario donde las personas LGBTI enfrentan rechazo, marginación, aislamiento y persecución.

El año pasado, el activista jamaicano Maurice Tomlinson se convirtió en la primera persona en recibir el premio después de su creación, en honor de más de una década de activismo LGBTI y VIH en Jamaica.

«El premio me ha ayudado a alcanzar uno de mis sueños de lanzar campañas de sensibilización LGBT de la policía del Caribe», dijo Tomlinson. «Ganar el Premio David Kato me ha dado acceso a una escala global. No se puede subestimar su importancia: abre puertas que de otro modo permanecen firmemente cerrados «.

Más recientemente, el Premio David Kato fue concedido a Ali Erol en reconocimiento a su trabajo para luchar contra el estigma y la discriminación en Turquía en los últimos 20 años. Sr. Erol fundó la organización de campañas turca Kaos GL en 1994 y ahora está al frente de una campaña para reformar la Constitución turca.

«Me siento orgulloso de recibir el Kato Vision David y el Premio de voz», dijo Erol. «Recibir el premio me hace más fuerte, me hace más valiente, y me da más coraje para continuar con el trabajo que hago. Tomé la decisión de comprometer mi vida a esta lucha, y desde entonces me he mantenido comprometido con esta elección a pesar de todas las amenazas y dificultades. «

La convocatoria de candidaturas para el premio de 2013 generó más de 150 candidaturas de más de 120 países. La lista final de los cinco nominados incluido Aung Myo Min de Birmania, Diane Marie Rodríguez Zambrano de Ecuador, Donny Reyes, de Honduras, y Pepe Julian Onziema de Uganda. La convocatoria de candidaturas para el premio de 2014 se pondrá en marcha a finales de este año.

«El MSMGF se inspira para continuar este trabajo para honrar el legado de David Kato,» dijo el Dr. Ayala. «Si bien aún queda mucho por hacer hacia la garantía de los derechos humanos y de salud para todas las personas LGBTI, hay muchos ejemplos de cambios positivos que suceden en estos momentos. Reconociendo esta importante obra nos da esperanza, y nos recuerda que la realización de estos derechos es posible sin importar lo difícil que sea el desafíos.

David Kato Vision & Voice Award Secretariat Moves to Global Forum on MSM & HIV

The Steering Committee of the David Kato Vision & Voice Award announced today that the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF) has been selected to serve as the next Secretariat of the prestigious international award, which recognizes leaders who work to uphold the sexual rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people around the world. The Secretariat moves to the MSMGF from the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), which helped establish the award and served as its Secretariat since the award’s inception in 2011.

“The leadership of IPPF has been instrumental in the success of the David Kato Award and its work to further David’s vision of a world where LGBTI people can live free of violence, stigma, and discrimination,” said MSMGF Executive Director Dr. George Ayala. “The MSMGF is honored to have the opportunity to continue support for this important initiative.”

The David Kato Award was founded in commemoration of the life and work of renowned Ugandan human rights activist David Kato, who was tragically murdered at his home in Kampala in January 2011. David Kato campaigned tirelessly for human rights throughout his career, with special attention to the rights of LGBTI people across Africa.

Awarded annually, the David Kato Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates courage and outstanding leadership in advocating for the sexual rights of LGBTI individuals, particularly in challenging circumstances and unsupportive policy environments where LGBTI people face rejection, marginalization, isolation, and persecution.

Last year, Jamaican activist Maurice Tomlinson became the first person to receive the award after its establishment, in honor of more than a decade of LGBTI and HIV activism in Jamaica.

“The award has helped me achieve one of my dreams of carrying out LGBT sensitivity training for Caribbean police,” said Mr. Tomlinson.  “Winning the David Kato Award has given me access on a global scale. You cannot underestimate its importance: it opens doors which would otherwise remain firmly shut.”

Most recently, the David Kato Award was awarded to Ali Erol in recognition of his work to fight stigma and discrimination in Turkey over the past 20 years. Mr. Erol founded the Turkish campaigning organization Kaos GL in 1994 and is now at the forefront of a campaign to reform the Turkish constitution.

“I am proud to receive the David Kato Vision and Voice Award,” said Mr. Erol. “Receiving the award makes me stronger, makes me braver, and gives me more courage to continue with the work I do. I made the choice to commit my life to this struggle, and since then I’ve remained committed to this choice despite all the threats and difficulties.”

The call for nominations for the 2013 award generated more than 150 nominations from over 120 countries. The final shortlist of five nominees included Aung Myo Min from Burma, Diane Marie Rodríguez Zambrano from Ecuador, Donny Reyes from Honduras, and Pepe Julian Onziema from Uganda. The call for nominations for the 2014 award will be launched later this year.

“The MSMGF is inspired to continue this work to honor David Kato’s legacy,” said Dr. Ayala. “While much more remains to be done toward ensuring health and human rights for all LGBTI people, there are so many examples of positive change happening right now. Recognizing this important work gives us hope, and it reminds us that the realization of these rights is possible no matter how daunting the challenges.
