Sin revolución sexual, no existe la revolución ciudadana

Diane Rodríguez, activista por los derechos de lesbianas, gays, transexuales y bisexuales (LGTB) y fundadora de la Asociación Silueta X, ha sido la primera candidata transexual a la Asamblea Nacional de Ecuador por el movimiento Ruptura 25 en las pasadas elecciones del 17 de febrero. No consiguió su objetivo, pero asegura que ha servido para sacudir las concepciones más conservadoras. Hablamos con ella sobre su experiencia en estas elecciones, así como del futuro más inmediato en su país.
-Después de muchos años como activista se presentó como candidata a la Asamblea Nacional, siendo la primera candidata transexual en la historia de Ecuador, ¿qué le llevó a tomar esta decisión?
Principalmente tiene que ver con el activismo y, en segundo lugar, por visibilización del tema GLBT1. Si hacemos un análisis de Ecuador, nos encontramos en una cultura sumamente prejuiciosa y fundamentalista que sigue los dogmas de forma cegada. Con mi candidatura, he sacudido aquellas concepciones más conservadoras y las he llevado a la reflexión, eso es indiscutible. Por otra parte, el activismo me ha orientado a que nosotros podemos proponer un sinnúmero de leyes y proyectos de ley, pero sin embargo es en la Asamblea, en la legislación, donde se concretan. Y nadie, por mucho que tengamos simpatizantes -y hay muchos actualmente- de los temas GLBT, podrá defender mejor nuestros propios temas que nosotros mismos.
-Durante la campaña electoral y el mismo día de las elecciones ocurrieron diferentes episodios. Me refiero a la propuesta del candidato a la presidencia de Ecuador, Nelson Zavala, para modificar los artículos 66, 67 y 68 de la Constitución de la República y reducir así los derechos de los homosexuales, o el hecho de que usted se haya visto obligada a votar en la fila de los hombres. Un mes después de la cita electoral, ¿cuál es su balance?
Fue un ejercicio indiscutiblemente de reflexión, no solo para los GLBT sino para la ciudadanía en general. Mucha gente se puede preguntar hoy en día qué más valora: sus creencias o sus derechos. Estoy segura de que muchos ecuatorianos se hacen esta pregunta pues, en definitiva, vivimos una campaña campal, sobre todo por las posturas de reivindicación de los derechos GLBT abanderadas por quien suscribe esta respuesta, y la postura conservadora, arcaica y privadora de derechos humanos como es el dogma que empleó este candidato presidencial.

En todo caso, en estos momentos el tema GLBT en Ecuador está en auge, estamos impulsando las reformas a la ley del Registro Civil y hemos demandado al Pastor Nelson Zavala, el cual fue sentenciado a la pena máxima por parte del Tribunal Contencioso Electoral.
En lo personal, estoy pensando en demandarlo por sus últimas declaraciones post-campaña al decir que soy un “hombre vestido de mujer”, vulnerando el Srt. 11 Inc. 2 de la Constitución de la República del Ecuador, que habla acerca de la no discriminación por identidad de género. Haciendo un balance, la población GLBT y por supuesto la población en general hemos ganado, pues nuestros temas van viento en popa.
-En la noche electoral y después de conocerse los resultados a la presidencia de la República, Rafael Correa pidió disculpas al colectivo GLBT por algunas palabras equivocadas y aseguró que “somos diversos, pero jamás desiguales”. ¿Cómo interpreta estas declaraciones en un momento tan importante?
Me parece muy interesante e importante. Justamente yo en nombre de la Asociación Silueta X, Diverso Ecuador, M&M y otras organizaciones específicamente de la costa ecuatoriana enviamos una querella al Presidente en agosto del 2012. Él dijo que pediría disculpas en su reelección, y efectivamente lo hizo. Nos parece un acto loable de su parte. Sin embargo, esperamos más que buenas intenciones: necesitamos leyes, proyectos de inclusión real, etc. Esperamos que con sus declaraciones sus intenciones sean éstas, que se concreten en un futuro. Yo lo espero afanosamente, no como activista, no como política, no como representante GLBT, lo espero como una ciudadana transexual y reconocida por este mismo Estado pluriforme y diverso al que llamamos Ecuador.
-¿Cree que hay voluntad para seguir avanzando en derechos a nivel institucional?
Estamos frente a una nueva Asamblea. Es cierto que la mayoría son del oficialismo, pero dentro del oficialismo hay diversidad de pensamientos: feministas, humanistas, providas y profamilias. Como sabemos perfectamente, la mayoría de estos grupos providas/familias son grupos de la extrema derecha, que defienden posturas medievales como, por ejemplo, que una mujer violada sea obligada a no interrumpir su embarazo (sin importar la catástrofe psicológica de ella y los problemas sociales que enfrentará su hijo posiblemente en un orfanato, violaciones, abandonos, maltratos, etc.), o no permitir que podamos hacer uso del matrimonio legal o la adopción. Son los mismos grupos de derecha que defendían la esclavitud de los afros y a los cuales les privaron de derechos, y los mismos grupos que querían y quieren mantener en la actualidad a la mujer como esclava doméstica y sexual del hombre.

Entonces, puede que el Sr. Presidente tenga una predisposición para ciertos temas GLBT. Sin embargo, su gabinete lamentablemente (espero equivocarme), se está contaminando de aquella política que rechazamos día a día y aquellos personajes que responden a intereses particulares. Lo digo porque muchos asambleístas nuevos y reelectos se han manifestado abiertamente con esta tendencia PRO y eso es lamentable.
Sin revolución sexual no existe la revolución ciudadana que tanto se enaltece. Así de simple, sin ofender, sin polemizar, pero es la verdad. Una revolución debe incluir a todos los ciudadanos y con mayor énfasis a aquellos que hemos sidodiscriminados históricamente por las familias y grupos de poderes, como son los extremistas religiosos. Y uno de esos grupos discriminados somos los GLBT, y si tenemos derechos a medias o migajas, con todo el respeto, entonces esto no es revolución.
-No ha conseguido ser asambleísta legislativa, ¿continuará realizando política dentro de Ruptura 25 o se dedicará exclusivamente a su labor en los movimientos sociales?
Continúo con mi trabajo desde la plataforma de la sociedad civil organizada. Además, de haber sido electa, mi contacto con la misma seguiría. Incluso me imaginaba cómo organizar mi agenda cuando quisiera ir a una protesta, porque si me hubieran elegido asambleísta, no me quitaría las ganas de pararme en un plaza con un cartel y exigir derechos, independientemente de qué grupo social sea. Por ahora, estoy dedicada a mi activismo político.
-Usted manifestó en una entrevista que ha nacido en una época en la que tiene que luchar, ¿lo sigue pensando?
Bueno, es la verdad. Esta no es una época para que los GLBT disfruten de este sistema social. El que reflexione sobre los derechos GLBT puede venir y agarrarme la mano y sentir correr la temperatura de la misma, la ansiedad de que se nos entregue lo que por derecho nos pertenece. Y quien piense que tiene todos sus derechos siendo GLBT, o es de clase alta, de derecha o un/a conformista. El no tener ni siquiera el acceso a los derechos más básicos que tiene cualquier Cisgénero-Hetero-Normado es muy lamentable. Yo me privo de un sinnúmero de cosas que me gustaría hacer, como escribir poesía y pintar. Dedicarme al arte y ejercer mi profesión de psicóloga. Sin embargo, estoy en una lucha que me priva de todo esto, incluso me priva hasta de mis momentos de intimidad con mi pareja porque estoy dispuesta a sacrificar todo, para que las próximas generaciones puedan vivir lo que yo no he vivido.
Yo sí valoro el que hoy pueda opinar y promover derechos, cuando hace 15 años un homosexual o transexual era encarcelado/a por el simple hecho per se, aquí en Ecuador. Y por tanto, soy consecuente con esas luchas, pues deseo continuar ese proceso de la revolución sexual, entregando mi vida a la misma. Es un proceso que no termina en esta generación. Brincos diéramos si terminara en esta o la próxima generación, pero pasarán siquiera 4 generaciones más -por lo menos en este país- para tener derechos plenos y esto es algo por lo que estoy dispuesta a continuar luchando el resto de mi vida. Estoy dispuesta a dar hasta mi vida misma, con la firme convicción de que esta sociedad será juzgada por la historia.
–Para finalizar, si quiere añadir algo más…
Pues quisiera concluir con la motivación a todos los activistas a nivel latinoamericano. Quisiera que entiendan que no podemos esperar a que nos den derechos, tenemos que levantarnos de nuestras sillas a buscarlos. Busquemos aliados, incluso aquellos de las iglesias que nos desvalorizan, hay muchos que nos valoran y que descalifican el dogma discriminatorio de esta institución. Solo entendiendo y comprendiendo que tenemos que luchar podremos vivir con euforia, con audacia y con la libre convicción de vivir siendo libres. Pero jamás vivir de rodillas, sentada o supeditada a un sistema controlado por gente que ni siquiera está viva, y que se ha legitimado con el tiempo, eso es imperdonable de nuestra parte. Los invito a luchar conmigo, tomémonos de la mano y caminemos juntos hacia el mundo que aspiramos en abstracto y que se encuentra a poco tiempo de concretarse. Formen parte de la historia, no se hagan a un lado de ella ni sean el repuesto del tiempo, formen parte del mismo. Abrazos fuertes, combativos y libertarios a todos aquellos activistas de los derechos humanos del mundo.

No sexual revolution, there is the citizen’s revolution

Diane Rodriguez, an activist for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and founder of the Silueta X Association, is the first transgender candidate to the National Assembly of Ecuador by the movement in the past 25 Rupture 17 election February. Not achieved its goal, but says it has served to shake more conservative conceptions. We talked with her about her experience in these elections and the immediate future in their country.
-After many years as an activist was presented as a candidate for the National Assembly, the first transgender candidate in the history of Ecuador, what led him to make this decision?
Mainly it has to do with activism and, secondly, for visibility GLBT1 theme. If we analyze Ecuador, we are in a highly prejudiced culture and fundamentalist dogmas following blindly. In my application, I rocked those conceptions more conservative and have led to reflection, that is indisputable. Moreover, the activism has guided me we can propose a number of laws and bills, but nevertheless is in the Assembly, in law, where the possibilities. And no, as much as we supporters-and there are many now-of GLBT issues, you can better defend our own issues ourselves.
-During the election campaign and on the day of the elections took different episodes. I refer to the proposal by the presidential candidate of Ecuador, Nelson Zavala, to amend sections 66, 67 and 68 of the Constitution and thus reduce the rights of homosexuals, or the fact that you have been forced to vote in the row of men. A month after the election date, what is your assessment?
It was undoubtedly an exercise of reflection, not only for the GLBT but to the general public. Many people today might ask what value most: their beliefs or their rights. I’m sure many Ecuadorians ask this question because, ultimately, we live a pitched campaign, especially the positions of GLBT rights claims flagged by the undersigned this response, and conservatively privadora archaic human rights as is the dogma that used this presidential candidate.

In any case, right now in Ecuador GLBT theme is booming, we are promoting reforms to the Civil Registry Law and have sued the Pastor Nelson Zavala, who was sentenced to the maximum penalty by the Electoral Tribunal.
Personally, I’m thinking of suing for his latest post-campaign statements by saying that I am a «man in drag», violating the SRT. 11 Inc. 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador, which talks about non-discrimination based on gender identity. On balance, the GLBT population and the general course we won, because our issues are going well.
On election night, and after learning the results to the presidency of the Republic, Rafael Correa apologized to LGBT people by some wrong words and said «we are diverse, but never unequal.» How do you interpret these statements in such an important time?
I find it very interesting and important. Just me on behalf of the Association Silueta X, Miscellaneous Ecuador, M & M and other organizations specifically on the Ecuadorian coast sent a complaint to the President in August 2012. He said he would apologize to his re-election, and indeed it did. We find a praiseworthy act on your part. However, we expect more than good intentions: we need laws, real inclusion projects, etc.. We hope that with their statements their intentions are these, which are realized in the future. I hope so eagerly, not as an activist, not politics, not as a representative GLBT, I hope as a citizen transsexual and recognized by that State multifaceted and diverse that we call Ecuador.
– Do you think there will to continue to advance rights at the institutional level?
We are facing a new Assembly. It is true that most of the ruling, but within the ruling there is diversity of thoughts: feminists, humanists, and profamilias lifers. As we know well, most of these lifers groups / families are groups of the extreme right, who defend medieval positions, for example, that a raped woman is obliged not to terminate her pregnancy (regardless of the disaster psychological problems she and social face possibly his son in an orphanage, rape, abandonment, abuse, etc..), or not allow us to make use of legal marriage or adoption. These are the same groups that defended slavery right of afros and which deprived them of rights, and the same groups they wanted and now they want to keep women as domestic and sexual slave of man.

So the President may have a predisposition for certain LGBT issues. However, his cabinet unfortunately (I may be wrong) that is being polluted by political and daily reject characters that match those interests. I say this because many new and re-elected assemblymen have spoken out this trend PRO and that is unfortunate.
No sexual revolution no citizen revolution that both exalts. Quite simply, no offense, no polemics, but it’s true. A revolution must include all citizens and with greater emphasis on those who have historically sidodiscriminados families and groups of powers, such as religious extremists. And one of those discriminated against are the GLBT groups, and if we are entitled to half or crumbs, with all respect, then this is not revolution.
-There has got to be Assemblyman legislative, policy will continue? Rupture within 25 or be devoted exclusively to his work in social movements?
I continue with my work from the platform of civil society organizations. Moreover, having been elected, I would contact therewith. I even imagine how to organize my schedule when I want to go to a protest, because if I had been elected Assemblyman, I will not take away the desire to stand on a square with a sign and bragging rights, regardless of which social group is. For now, I am dedicated to my political activism.
-You said in an interview that was born in a time when you have to fight, do you still thinking?
Well, it’s true. This is not a time for the GLBT enjoy this social system. The reflect on GLBT rights can come and hold my hand and feel the temperature run it, the anxiety that we deliver what rightfully belongs to us. And those who think they have all their rights being GLBT, or upper class, right or an / a conformist. Not having access to even the most basic rights have any cisgender-Straight-normed is very unfortunate. I deprive myself of a number of things I like to do, like writing poetry and painting. Dedicate art and practice my profession as a psychologist. However, I am in a struggle that robs me of all this, even to deprive me of my moments with my partner because I am willing to sacrifice everything, so that future generations can live what I have lived.
I do appreciate that today can review and promote rights, when 15 years ago a homosexual or transsexual was imprisoned / a for the simple fact per se, here in Ecuador. And therefore, I am consistent with those struggles, because I want to continue this process of the sexual revolution, giving my life to it. It is a process that does not end in this generation. If we gave jumps ended in this or the next generation, but it will even four generations, at least in this country, to have full rights and this is something I’m willing to continue to fight the rest of my life. I’m willing to give up my life itself, with the firm conviction that this society will be judged by history.
-Finally, if you want to add something else …
Well I would like to conclude with the motivation to all activists in Latin America. I want you to understand that we can not wait to give us rights, we need to get up from our chairs to look. Seek allies, even those of the churches that we devalue, there are many that we value and discriminatory dogma disqualify this institution. Only by understanding and realizing that we have to fight we can live with euphoria, with courage and self-belief to live to be free. But ever live on my knees, sitting, or subject to a system controlled by people who are not even alive, and has legitimized over time, that is unforgivable from us. I invite you to fight with me, let’s take her hand and walk together towards the world we aspire in the abstract and it is just time to materialize. Be part of history, not made at one side of it or are not the spare time, are part of it. Hugs strong, combative and libertarians all those human rights activists worldwide.
