Por primera vez, una candidata transexual participó, en una contienda legislativa en Ecuador. Diane Rodriguez de 30 años, nació en Guayaquil, la ciudad más grande del país, bajo el nombre de Luis Benedicto. Pero todo cambia, cuando ella tenía dieciséis años de edad. ”Creo que fue el período más difícil de la adolescencia, cuando me revelé como una mujer ante mi familia. Me botaron de mi casa. Yo no tenía nada por supuesto. Así que empecé a prostituirme”, dijo Diane Rodríguez al L’Express. ”Las trabajadoras sexuales no han elegido estar en la calle, añade. Son personas que tienen un gran valor humano”. En un país donde ocho de cada diez personas son católicos, la prostitución y la transexualidad son inquietantes.

Con el tiempo, Diane Rodríguez por fin encuentra un trabajo en un hotel. Obligada a renunciar por ser demasiado femenina, ella se propone enfrentarlos y demandarlos con una queja legal, para ser reintegrada en el establecimiento, pero esta vez como mujer. Evadiendo el hotel su obligación, indican que para ello, debe cambiar sus nombres en la cédula de identidad. Al final de su batalla legal en el 2009, ella finalmente consigue sus nuevos documentos. Aunque su nombre de mujer está corregido en la cédula, el sexo “masculino” permanece. Por esto, hoy en día, se vio obligada a presentar una reforma a la ley del registro civil con otra organización. También le permitió decidirse en participar en una contienda política.

La primera postulante a Asambleísta/Congresista transexual en América Latina

“La batalla para el registro civil esta en curso para mí. Esperemos que el segundo debate en la Asamblea, se resuelva después de la campaña. Más allá de mi caso personal, yo realmente espero que en el futuro, la identificación en la cédula de Identidad hable de género y no del sexo. Este es el propósito de la campaña “Mi género en Mi cedula” de Silueta X, una organización que fundó hace cuatro años, y del Proyecto transgénero Quito ”, precursora de la misma. En Argentina, el Senado ya ha aprobado en mayo de 2012, una ley que define y reconoce la identidad de género. El Domingo 17 de febrero, durante las elecciones parlamentarias, legislativas y presidenciales, Diane intentó convertirse en la primera Asambleista transexual en América Latina: representando el tercer distrito de la provincia de Guayas, por Ruptura 25, un movimiento de izquierda, formada por antiguos partidarios del actual jefe de Estado, Rafael Correa.

Este último, presidente desde 2007 y representante de la izquierda radical, se encuentra en la búsqueda de un tercer mandato. La cuestión ahora, es que el derecho de las minorías sexuales ha estado ausente de sus programas, a pesar de que la Constitución del 2008, que a su paso, se supone reconocen los derechos de la diversidad sexual. Diane Rodríguez en representación del movimiento que la inscribió, Ruptura 25, quiere sacudir las políticas.

“Debemos tener leyes afirmativas”

”La gente es prejuiciosa, dice Diane Rodríguez. Ningún político quiere hablar del tema, y para ser honesta, peor “nadie quiere hacerlo”. En mi opinión personal es que necesitamos contar con leyes afirmativas, así la población se re-estructurará. Para las políticas se debe tener valor, no solo estrategias. Por mi parte, durante la campaña, hablé sobre el matrimonio igualitario, derechos de la mujer al aborto, etc. “ Incluso, su candidatura despertó al homofóbico – Nelson Zavala, también candidato presidencial evangelista y que incluso ha hecho la propuesta de modificación de los artículos 66, 67 y 68 de la Constitución para reducir los derechos de los homosexuales. Diane Rodríguez, rechazó esas declaraciones recibiendo un gran apoyo. Ella es muy optimista sobre el futuro: “Yo he posicionado política y mediáticamente la lucha por la diversidad sexual en Ecuador, pero yo solo soy una representante de este movimiento, y en algún momento deberán continuar sin mí, pues solo es un impulso para la próximas generaciones”.
