CINCO FINALISTA DE PREMIO FRONT LINE DEFENDERS

Cinco activistas de derechos humanos fueron nombrados como finalistas para el Premio Line Defenders Frente de Defensores de Derechos Humanos en Riesgo ayer.
Entre ellos se encuentran Diane Rodríguez, activista LGBT y la primera mujer transexual a presentarse a un cargo público en el Ecuador, que está viviendo en una casa de seguridad después de recibir amenazas de muerte.
Fellow nominado, el mexicano Juan Carlos Flores Solís, pasó 10 meses en prisión por liderar la oposición a la construcción de un gasoducto cerca de un volcán activo.

Los finalistas también incluyen tres abogados de derechos humanos, China Guo Feixion ha sido encarcelado en varias ocasiones y torturado para “desafiar la corrupción”, según la organización de derechos humanos financiados por el Estado. Rasul Jafarov, que se encuentre detenida actualmente, fue detenido en Azerbaiyán el “cargos falsos de empresa ilegal, evasión de impuestos y el abuso del poder oficial”. En Egipto, Yara Sallam ha sido condenado a dos años de prisión y dos años de vigilancia de la policía después de que fue detenido junto con otros manifestantes durante una manifestación contra la ley protesta controvertido en junio de 2014.

El director ejecutivo Mary Lawlor dijo que el premio € 15.000 “celebra la valentía” de los defensores de los derechos humanos.
El ganador será anunciado el 1 de mayo.

FIVE FINALISTS FOR FRONT LINE DEFENDERS AWARD

Five human rights campaigners were named as finalists for the Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk yesterday.

Among them are Diane Marie Rodriguez Zambrano, an LGBT activist and the first transgender woman to stand for public office in Ecuador, who is living in a safe house after receiving death threats.

Fellow nominee, Mexican Juan Carlos Flores Solis, spent 10 months in prison for leading opposition to the construction of a gas pipeline near an active volcano.

The finalists also include three human rights lawyers.

Chinese Guo Feixion has been repeatedly jailed and tortured for “challenging corruption,” according to the State-funded human rights organisation.

Rasul Jafarov, who is currently being detained, was arrested in Azerbaijan on “bogus charges of illegal enterprise, tax evasion and abuse of official power”.

In Egypt, Yara Sallam has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and two years’ police monitoring after she was arrested with other protesters during a demonstration against the controversial protest law in June 2014.

Executive director Mary Lawlor said the €15,000 award “celebrates the courage” of human rights defenders.

The winner will be announced on May 1.
